Create an Animal

Introduction: The diversity of organisms on Earth is staggering. However, all organisms – from amoebas to zebras—have an important characteristic. Each is able to survive in a particular environment. In order to survive, each must have certain adaptations, in terms of anatomy and behavior, that are suited to its environment.

Project: You will be designing a hypothetical animal that will live in a particular environment. You will then be required to:

    1. Describe the animal’s environment. Be specific about location, temperatures, other living organisms that it will encounter, vegetation and the like.
    2. Describe your animal's behavior in its environment (ex: how it obtains food, where it lives, its defensive behaviors, etc.)
    3. Describe which anatomical structures and features would help the animal to survive in its environment.
    4. Sketch a design and create a model of your animal. Be sure to name it! Use any materials to create your model that you want to (ex: paper mache, styrofoam, pipe cleaners, balloons, clay, markers, etc.) Bring these materials to class with you during each of the scheduled work days!!! Your grade depends on it!!!

Background information: Chapters 26-36 are all about animals. We are now covering Chapter 26. You may want to look through these chapters for ideas for your animal, or you can be independently creative. Chapter 45 is about the biosphere. This chapter would be good for getting information about your assigned environment. Remember that your animal must be adapted to its environment in some way.

Procedure: You may work with one partner if you choose. If you make this choice you must also create a model of the organism's environment!

Day One: April 9, 2002: *Tell Mrs. Sutyak if you will be working alone or who your partner will be

*Start to think! Select an environment for your animal to live in. Begin to describe your animal's behavior and structures that might allow it to live in its environment

*Begin to sketch a design of your animal, be sure to include this sketch with your finished project

* Decide which materials you will need and bring them with you for the remainder of the project!!

Day Two: April 11, 2002 * Continue to describe your animal's environment

*Begin to create your model, describe your animal’s behaviors and adaptations to its environment.

*Continue to bring your materials to class each day!!!

Day Three: April 12, 2002 *Continue to work on building your model.

*Finish describing information about your animal.

*Name your animal

Due Date: Your animal model and summary sheet are due by the end of school on Tuesday April 16th, 2002. NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED. If you are absent wt will be due the very first day of your return. NO EXCEPTIONS! This is a major project. Late work can earn no more than half credit!!! Plan ahead!!!

This sheet must accompany your project.
